Grand Officers in Brattleboro, hosted by Bingham Chapter #30 and Mayflower Chapter #19

The day started early for this traveler, Nancy and I left the house to pick Sister Jerri and Sister Cheryl on our way to Brattleboro. Yes the fog was thick, but the spirits were high as we traveled south. Sister Jerri was dropped off at 9:30 for an early meeting and Cheryl, Nancy and I headed off to explore towns in the area we had not been to before. I was the driver and Sister Nancy the navigator; Sister Cheryl our rookie explorer was excited to join in the journey.

Well I have to add that the Vermont State Map of roads and attractions is good for only four of the five seasons here in Vermont. . . . not MUD Season! As we traveled toward Halifax we found ourselves on Jacksonville Stage Road (clearly marked as a paved road on the map) . . . oh nay nay! This was not the case, never mind that we ignored the sign the “ROAD CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC” “RESIDENTS ONLY”

For the next 20 minutes, we were in the middle of the worst muddy, ruddy road I have ever seen . . . no place to turn around, and when there was; we were already committed! Thanks for a higher power and a Subaru . . . I will say that it is trip that will NEVER be forgotten. I’ll leave out the part that included a wilderness rest stop.

Sister Cheryl was in tears, as she was laughing so hard. Sister Nancy and I looked at each other as to say, “How are we going to top this adventure?” It was a great trip and I was glad we could share it with a creditable witness! I’ll turn the blog over to Sister Nancy to tell you all about the rest of the day!

I watched as the buffet table was loaded with delicious dishes of all kinds! There were baked beans, ham, scalloped potatoes, green bean casserole, and several kinds of salads. Yum! The meal was finished off with Ice cream and cookies for desert. No one would go hungry.

The dining room was then transformed into a theater with members from Bingham and Mayflower performing a brief play.

A dragon, a police officer, a wizard and a dragonfly kept us entertained with a search for the perfect motor cycle for Worthy Grand Patron, Richard. "Yes we believe in dragons".

No kilt for Jody Boyd on this St Patrick's Day but he looked good as a dragon!

Another room transition occurred and we were set for an open meeting. Highlights of the afternoon were the four little children who attended with their parents. Such well-behaved little ones! Their young mom is an Eastern Star!

Grand Officers were presented including Past Grand Matron Gladys Baker who is all set to turn 92 shortly. She spoke on behalf of the Past Grands and shared a little story about the trouble Noah would have building an ark in these modern times:

IN THE YEAR 2006, THE LORD CAME DOWN TO NOAH, WHO WAS NOW LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES AND SAID:

"ONCE AGAIN THE EARTH HAS BECOME WICKED AND OVER-POPULATED, AND I SEE THE END OF ALL FLESH BEFORE ME".

"BUILD ANOTHER ARK AND SAVE TWO OF EVERY LIVING THING, ALONG WITH A FEW GOOD HUMANS".

HE GAVE NOAH THE BLUEPRINTS SAYING, YOU HAVE SIX MONTHS TO BUILD THE ARK BEFORE I WILL START THE UNENDING RAIN FOR 40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS.

SIX MONTHS LATER, THE LOORD LOOKED DOWN AND SAW NOAH WEEPING IN HIS YARD... BUT NO MARK.
"NOAH" HE ROARED,
"I AM ABOUT TO START THE RAIN..... WHERE'S THE ARK"? "FORGIVE ME LORD",
BUT THINGS HAVE CHANGED:.

I NEED A BUILDING PERMIT. I'VE BEEN ARGUING WITH THE BUILDING INSPECTER
ABOUT THE NEED FOR A SPRINKLER SYSTEM. MY NEIGHBORS CLAIM THAT I'VE VIOLATED THE NEIGHBORHOOD ZONING LAWS BY BUILDING THE ARK IN MY YARD EXCEEDING THE HEIGHT LIMITATIONS. WE HAD TO GO TO THE DEVELOPMENT APPEALS BOARD FOR A DECISION. THEN THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION DEMANDED A BOND BE POSTED FOR THE FUTURE COSTS OF MOVING POWER LINES AND OVERHEAD OBSTRUCTIONS, TO CLEAR THE PASSAGE FOR THE ARK'S MOVE TO SEA. I TOLD THEM THAT THE SEA WOULD BE COMING TO US, BUT THEY WOULD HEAR
NOTHING OF IT.

GETTING THE WOOD WAS ANOTHER PROBLEM. THERE'S A BAN ON CUTTING LOCAL TREES TO SAVE THE SPOTTED OWL.
I TRIED TO CONVINCE THE ENVIROMENTALISTS THAT I NEEDED THE WOOD TO SAVE THE OWLS, BUT NO GO.WHEN I STARTED GATHERING THE ANIMALS; I GOT SUED BY THE ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUP. THEY INSISTED THAT I WAS CONFINING WILD ANIMALS AGAINST THEIR WILL. AS WELL THEY AGRUED THE ACCOMODATIONS WERE TOO RESTRISTIVE AND WAS CRUEL AND INHUMANE TO PUT SO MANY ANIMALS IN A CONFINED SPACE.

THEN THE EPA, RULED THAT I COULDN'T BUILD UNTIL THEY CONDUCTED AN ENVIROMENTAL IMPACTSTUDY ON YOUR PROPOSED FLOOD. I AM STILL TRYING TO RESOLVE A COMPLAINT WITH THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION ON HOW MANY MINORITIES I'M SUPPOSED TO HIRE FOR MY BUILDING CREW. ALSO, THE TRADE UNIONS SAY THAT I CAN'T USE MY SONS. THEY INSIST I HIRE ONLY UNION WORKERS WITH ARK BUILDING EXPERIENCE.

TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, THE IRS SEIZED ALL MY ASSETS, CLAIMING I'M TRYING TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY ILLEGALLY WITH ENDANGERED SPECIES. SO, FORGIVE ME LORD, BUT IT WOULD TAKE ME AT LEAST TEN YEARSFOR ME TO FINISH THIS ARK.

SUDDENLY, THE SKIES CLEARED, THE SUN BEGAN TO SHINE, AND A RAINBOW STRETCHED ACROSS THE SKY.

NOAH LOOKED UP IN WOONDER AND ASKED, "YOU MEAN, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO DESTROY THE WORLD?"

"NO, SAID THE LORD. THE GOVERNMENT BEAT ME TO IT".

Grand Adah, Marie Perry, shared her favorite quote by Eleanor Roosevelt "“A woman is like a tea bag; you never know how strong it is until it's in hot water.”

53 people were in attendance on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon. The collection for the special project: Vermont National guard Charitable Foundation was $75.

A meeting on St. Patrick's Day wouldn't be complete without an Irish blessing, shared by Brother Dan, "may your kilt be short enough to dance a jig and long enough to cover your lucky charms".

Grand Officers in Hinesburg

On a bright sunny spring morning Dan and I traveled south to Hinesburg for the first Grand Officer's visition in March. After sneaking in the back way and getting a look at lunch preparations we went upstairs to say hi to folks we haven't seen much of all winter. Later we sat down to a lunch of corn chowder and a variety of sandwiches. Cookies and ice cream rounded out the meal.
After the meal we gathered in the chapter room for an open meeting. Little did we know that there seemed to be a plague in Hinesburg which kept many of their own members from attending. We were told by Worthy Matron, Ellie Carpenter, (who was also sick) of various forms of entertainment that had been arranged and fallen through at the last minute.

Thank goodness, Izzy Smart, (Brother Richard Preston) was able to fill in at the last minute. Izzy had us rolling with laughter. He also mc'd as raffle prizes were awarded as part of a money making project LaPlotte has been working on for the last few months. The money raised will help send a local student to conservation camp.

Many, many Grand Officers were presented and welcomed. District Deputy Grand Instructor, James Chancey filled in on the organ. Sister Natalie Billings was tricked into bringing herself to the East where her mom, Sister Ellie presented her with her 25 year pin. Worthy Grand Matron, Sister Patty spoke for the good of the Order and invited Sister Jerri to share about the many Star members going through tough medical times including Worshipful Grand Master, Brother Phil Morton who is receiving treatment for cancer. Patty shared a story about lightening bugs. She spoke of the pleasure of getting back together after a long winter, sharing hugs and smiles as an Eastern Star family. We need to work harder at saving our beautiful Order of the Easten Star. Bring in new members, reactivate old members and get them involved. The Grand Family will be doing an Initation in East Burke tomorrow.

There will be two more Grand Officers visits next weekend. Check out oes-vt.org for more information. Iris pins are for sale from the Star Points or Sister Patty. Brother Richard had Sister Cheryl Giles presented in the East to receive her travel award. Brother Richard reminded us that he and Patty were available to speak to various groups to help generate interest in Easter Star membership.
Honorary memberships and gifts were presented to Sister Patty and Brother Richard on behalf of LaPlotte Chapter.
We had a laugh when General Grand Chapter Committee member, Brother Bud Godin decided that turn about was fair play and he deferred his opportunity to speak to Sister Barbara Wheaton. Brother Bill Cotrofeld spoke and sang on behalf of the Past Grands! He received a standing ovation. (You should have been here! All I can say is I will hold off signing up for social security any time soon!) The Worthy Matron asked Sister Bunny if she felt lucky to be asked to speak after Brother Bill. Laughs all around again. Sister Bunny's response was graciously short and sweet.
$58 was collected for Vermont National Guard Charitable Foundation .
Our goal is 20,000.
Smiles were seen all around as the meeting ended. It was good to reconnect with our Eastern Star family after a long winter's break!

Pronunciation
Now, if you're gonna say things Texans say, you've got to be sure to get the pronunciation right.
Here are a few tips:

In Texas, the "g" in the suffix "ing" is silent. Thus, "fixing to" becomes "fixin' to."

chester drawers: that piece of furniture you put your socks in.

nuther thing: another thing

hairyew: a greeting used when one wants to discern the physical and emotional wellbeing of
his/her companion.

ah'mo: I am going to. E.g.: "Ah'mo get back to work."

sure'nuff: (one word). Used as a superfluous question in place of "Really?" or "Is that right?"
Also used as an adverb in sentences.

rench: the process of laving with water, possibly to remove soap or shampoo.
You can also "rench out" socks, if you've a mind to.

warsh: the process one engages in before renching.

On January 21st the Annual Mid-Winter Meeting will be held at the Granite Lodge, in Barre, Vermont. The time for sign-in and coffee will be 10:00 a.m. with Welcome and Opening remarks at 10:30 a.m. by our Worthy Grand Matron Sister Patty Rousseau and Brother Richard Backus our Worthy Grand Patron.

Lunch will be served at 12:00 o'clock at the price of $10.00. Then at 1:00 p.m. they will reconvene into groups and then a full group discussion afterwards. All working committees will meet but even if you are not on any committee, we as members are encouraged to attend and share ideas for the future of our Order. We need all as members, must come together to ensure that the Order of the Eastern Star in Vermont continues to grow and become stronger.

Charity Chapter Good Works and New Member

Charity Chapter No. 57, Williamstown, Vt. Left to Right: Sisters Sharon Lunde, Helen Duke, Barbara Smith and Beverly Ouimet. These Sisters along with others wrapped all this gifts. Charity Chapter No. 57 has a program each year called “Adopt a Family Project.” This year (2011) six families and ten children will receive the Christmas Gifts shown on the table. This is one of three tables with Christmas Gifts.

Our new members Tara and Joan are inviting all Grand Representatives to a fun filled evening and dinner. Sister Tara Liloia is Grand Representative of Iowa and Sister Joan Whitesell of Puerto Rico. They are very keen members and I hope we can encourage them more by having some Grand Representatives visit our chapter on November 8th. Dinner is at 6:30 and meeting 7:30. Tara and Joan have a great program for everyone to enjoy. This is at Columbia Chapter #76 in Alburgh. Note from Sister Barbara Wheaton, GGCCM.

A “Basket Party” that is going to be hosted by Adoniram Chapter, No 22. The basket party is the first day of deer season,Saturday, November 12th. (A great time to go to a basket party while others are out walking in the woods.) It will be held at the Modern Woodmen of America (MWA) main building which is on Main Street (Route 30) Wells, Vermont. There is plenty of parking available. We will have a nice collection of baskets and door prizes. The cost to enter is $7 which includes lunch and one envelope of 10 tickets. Additional envelopes may be purchased. Doors will open at 11 a.m. The drawings will begin after lunch, rather than 1 p.m.

Tonight is our annual Thanksgiving feast, an exchange that started several years ago! We go to Red Mtn's Oct. meeting in costumes and bring the treats and refreshments and they come to our Nov. meeting; Thanks giving dinner on wheels - with lots of PIE! We eat and visit first, have our meeting and back to the Pie. This year we are in white as Our DDGI's were rescheduled to come this same night. Our offering was to ESTARL and we gave thanks for many things. 2 side liners from Chester, one w/ DDGI Sherrill Gould, 16 from Red Mtn with DDGI James Chancey and 15 of our members. Sister Helen Whitman is now an affiliate so she is Pro-tem Chaplain, Sister Eris doubles as AM and organist with Sister Addie still out of a home here, Brother Pug Chapin is awaiting a surgery call so he was absent but Bro. Stuart took the photo and was Sentinel pro-tem, Dale Woods graciously sat in for Electa as Pat Decatur was having a rough day (I know she was sad to miss all the laughs and pie). We hope she feels better.

Charity Chapter No. 57 Friendship Night

The Unpredictable 'Unpredictables'

Again, the “Unpredictables” singing group of LaPlotte Chapter #64 have graced the stage at the 11th annual Charlotte Tractor Parade with a little help from some of our friends, Garry Sharron playing bass, and Ellie’s grandson Eric on guitar. It was a gorgeous day with lots of sun and temperatures in the upper 70’s and a very appreciative audience.

The “Unpredictables” singing group has been entertaining at Eastern Star events and bringing their funny and lively entertainment to many nursing homes and senior centers around the state for many years now. We are presently working on our upcoming fall tour which will be kicking off very shortly.

What a fun time sharing memories. For our entertainment the PG's were asked to tell how they joined, on who and to recall a special memory, etc.. For some it was hard to choose just one.

What a fun way to learn the history of our Fraternal Family. It was echoed well that each sister or brother can have special nods, winks, stories and memories that only they (one or two) can readily recall a special memory and they can choose to share it or not. These were very apparent throughout the room, with smiles and laughs all around. It was repeated often how much each has counted on others to bring them through hard times and take great joy in celebrating whenever we can. Many now gone remembered so fondly. Whole families stretching generations or new memberships with vague intent turning into great joy and commitment. Fathers and daughters sharing the limelight and pride in each other.

What a pleasure to share some of these quiet, open, get to know you moments in Williamstown at Charity Chapter #57, with such service, hospitality, all timelessly set in a Christmas themed room.

Sadly no photos to share but I am pleased to report that our Lodge #46 and Chapter #89 hosted displaced people during the Irene event (23 to start and they ran a free BINGO for them with the children winning free candy). At least one camper took refuge from the water, parked and plugged into the building. This was truly our first chance to share our designated shelter. We are thankful for all our God given graces.

At our October meeting last night we also decided to open our doors and put on a free spaghetti dinner, Tue. Oct. 25th 5-7 PM for the community at the Lodge and we will accept donations only to be given to the local town Irene relief fund (as Jamaica was hit very hard). Grand Officers in Milton

Worthy Grand Patron, “We always have fun when we come up north!”

What a beautiful day for a meeting and counting yesterday’s weather that was two specular days in a row. Nice break for those who were traveling.

Grand Officers visitation at Chittenden Chapter No. 59 in Milton started out with members gathering to register with Sister Jerri Riegler, PGM. There were guest books to sign and John Hoyt also had tickets for our upcoming Turkey dinner in October.

At three pm we started the afternoon off with the entertainment portion of the day. . . . As I looked around the room, I had a good feeling everyone was enjoying the program. We were treated to several pieces of music performed by Hannah Crary and her fiddle. An intense quiet by the audience during the first piece, was a concern to Hannah (she explained) until we followed with a loud ovation.

Hannah added commentary between her numbers and won the group over with her bubbly personality.

After Hannah was finished, the Worth Patron had a surprise for the Worthy Grand Patron. The WGP was asked to join the WP in the West for ride on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

After mechanical issues were addressed, the bike was ‘pushed’ toward the East!

As this was an open meeting the officers of Chittenden Chapter No.59 entered the chapter room and took their places. The Bible was opened and The Lord’s Prayer offered. The American Flag was presented with escorts.

WGM Patty and WGP Richard were escorted and remained in the East where they were afforded the Grand Honors.

The presentation of General Grand Chapter Committee members was special as the newest GGCC member; Roland ‘Bud’ Godin was introduced. Congratulations Bud!

This was followed by the presentation of the Past Grand Officers, which included Chittenden Chapter member; Most Worshipful Phillip W Morton, Grand Master of Vermont.

After the presentation of the Grand Officers, WGM Patty spoke and shared a story about ‘choices’ and ended with; “And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance” The WGP spoke about the Special Project: Vermont National Guard Charitable Foundation and was pleased to add that the Grand Chapter raised over $6000.00 as of today. Great job by all, and we are not finished yet!

The WGM asked the WGP to join her on the North side of the East and as he approached from the West, she asked him to bring ‘reinforcements’ as he may need them. So he gathered up Sister Nancy Gross and continued his journey. The WGM said he better bring someone who can protect him, maybe someone in security. At this time he asked Brother Dan Gross to follow him to the East. When we arrived, the WGM and WGP had a special presentation to recognize Sister Nancy and Brother Dan for their dedication and talents as they (we) maintain the OES website for the Grand Chapter of Vermont. It is our pleasure!

Phillip Morton spoke on behalf of the Grand Lodge and spoke about the work being done around the state by our fraternal Brothers and Sisters. Very moving and we were glad to have heard of all the great work being done.

PGP Donnie Chamberlain spoke on behalf of the Past Grands, and to sum it up. . . .”He’s Back!” A special WOW to Sister Fay who still knows how to reel him back!

AGM Bunny spoke on behalf of the Grand Officers and mentioned that dinner was starting to smell pretty good. . . . . We all were starting to smell the treats from the kitchen.

Our silver collection, the special project was $102 and the report of the registration committee was 70 members present.

The meeting was closed and the Grand Chaplain offered grace before heading down to the dining room. Dinner was a beautiful assortment of hot dished and salads, rolls and beverages. The table favors were maple cotton candy for all! The dessert was this gorgeous cake, and was yummy!

Next meeting scheduled: September 25^th, Rainbow Girls: Grand Officer Reception, 2 pm – Morrisville.

GREAT TIME at the POKER RUN FUNDRAISER

Headed out to Waitsfield this morning, I drove through some low cloud cover, but by the time I reached Waitsfield, the day was gorgeous! At 8am the crowd was gathering at Mad River Lodge #77. Donations for breakfast were collected at the door, and we moved to the registration table where we were greeted by our organization committee; Jacqueline Shiner and James Chancey. We received our Score Card and first playing card. Great job you two!

The brothers of the lodge did an ‘outstanding’ job with breakfast for us all. We had an assortment of breads to start with. Note: These guys had the plates heating in the oven ahead of time! There was sausage, bacon, pancakes, waffles, juice and coffee. Yummy!!

Kenneth ‘Ken’ Gragg of the Vermont National Guard Charitable Foundation joined us as a rider/player. As Jackie had a prior engagement with her mom (Stowe Car Show) she did give the group a ‘send-off’ after the past grand chaplain blessed the ride.

Note: Make sure when we are ready to go, you don’t ‘have to go”!

On the road to our first check point at LaPlotte, No. 64 in Hinesburg. . . here are your 17 players;

We had a nice first leg over the Gap with a quick stop at the top for our delayed starters to catch the group,

and then off to Hinesburg for the second checkpoint. Pulling into LaPlotte, we were greeted by several members for our next playing card and some refreshments. Cold water and fresh fruit seemed to be the big hit. Also available were assorted quick breads and cookies, cheese and crackers.

Rod Churchill oversaw the drawing and assisted Richard with the ‘best route’ to the next checkpoint at Chittenden Chapter #59 in Milton.

After the quick split of the group most of us headed towards Richmond. Bunny and Richard got ‘held up’ behind a tractor trailer and decided to head straight to Milton. We traveled to Richmond, over to Essex and then on to Westford to take the Milton-Westford road into Milton. At this point, Nancy and I decided to take a short cut (photo opportunity). We waited about one minute for the bikes to round the corner on the Milton - Westford Road, great timing thanks to a putt putter in front of us!

We rolled into Chittenden, where the group was greeted by Jerri Riegler and Marie Morton. Jerri was our dealer for this stop.

Bottles of cold water and off the group went. Next stop, at the Mobil in Alburgh for fuel and ‘catch up’ on our score cards.The group headed north on Route 7, through St. Albans to Swanton, and out on 78 to Alburgh. It was great to see all the boats in the water, after all the high water we had earlier this year.

Our final stop before South Hero, we pitted at the Mobil for gas and refreshments. Thank you to Stuart for the drinks!

A nice ride down through the islands on a beautiful day, is there anything better?

We rounded the corner on the last leg to Island Chapter #73 in South Hero and I noticed a little kid in a pink shirt riding his mini motorcycle towards us waving to everyone. This was nice, I thought as we were about to turn into the parking lot. This was NO KID, it was Ron Boudreau, and he was sporting a beautiful dragon fly on his handle bars! NICE!

A great group welcomed us all as we arrived, parked our bikes and cars. We had one last card to be dealt to complete our hand. Then, if you felt you needed to ‘discard’ (one or multiple cards) to make a ‘better hand’, a complete deck of card was available for you FACE UP, and you could choose those card(s) for $5 each. The only catch, you had to throw a dart at the card (and hit it) before you could claim it!

James Chancey was your ‘dealer’ for this round! When all were done ‘discarding’ the score cards were turned in for verification and we all went off to lunch.

The Chapter had grilled burgers and hot dogs, baked beans, chips and toss salad, lemonade, water and coffee to drink. Dessert was ice cream (cones) cookies and carrot cake. Another YUM!

James announced the winners; 1^st prize and $86.25 to Tim Baker with four Kings, 2^nd prize and $17.25 to Dan Gross with a straight, 3^rd prize and $11.50 to Melissa Chancey for the worst hand.

Note: Before the prize money could be handed out, change had to be made (by Sister Jerri). We all waited until this was done, and presentations made. After which we all donated the prize money back!

Richard thanked everyone for their efforts and introduced Ken Gragg to speak on behalf of the Vermont National Guard Charitable Foundation.

The group raised $600.00 for the Foundation, nice work by all!

The last topic if the day was the start of discussions for a Spring Ride in the southern part of the state. . . Stay Tuned!

The next event is Grand Officers in Enosburgh with Swanton Chapter No.11 and Martha Washington Chapter No.44 on Wednesday, August 17^th. A Salad Lunch at 6:00pm followed by the Meeting at 7:30.

Sunday, July 31, 2011 - The first "Prisms of Light" Grand Officers first official visit was held at Queen Esther #7 Chapter in Waterbury, Vermont. This is Grand Worthy Patron Richard Bachus home chapter. 70 people came on a perfect Vermont day to enjoy in the festivities. It started with a BBQ chicken meal where no one went away hungry. The food was excellent.

At the end of the meal, we had entertainment from a local couple who sang beautifully including a medley of patriotic songs in which the membership joined in to a serenade of "Somewhere OVer the Rainbow" for Grand Worthy Matron Patty Roussseau.

After the entertainment, 50 year pins were presented to Sister Elizabeth H. Bordeaux, Worthy Grand Chaplin, PGM and her husband Robert. It was a special moment.

The room was quickly rearranged for the meeting and the addedum was performed. WGM Patty recieved a "free lei" and a pinwill wand. The Star Points entered the room wearing wizard hats. WGM Patty was escorted by WGP Richard to receive a special gift from each wizard. Many dragonflies appeared including a ring that WGM Patty wore through out the meeting. WGP Richard was not left out of the festivities as he received a poem and gifts. WGM Patty had to work to get her next gift. She was told to jump up and down to show her excitement and then was presented by WGP Richard with her honorary membership to Queen Esther.

We then held short form meeting where we heard from Worthy Grand Chaplin Betty (PGM) on news/greetings from General Grand, WGM Patty spoke of her alter cloth, bible marker, gavel, and sounding block. She also talked about working within the Masonic family and bringing us all together. WGP Richard gave updates on the calendar and other points of business.

The officers of Queen Esther did a beautiful job as always. Thank you for a wonderful event and lots of smiles.

Vermont 2011 Grand Assembly

What a weekend! Worthy Grand Matron Patty and Worthy Grand Patron Richard spent the entire weekend (ok they didn't do the sleepless overnights) at Rainbow Grand Assembly. It was so special having them there and show their commitment to strengthening the ties with the Masonic family.

Introductions of the Masonic Family were held Friday night and the OES was well represented. It was great seeing so many presented.

Sunday was the installation of officers and the Grand Worthy Advisor is of one of our sisters - Hannah Reen. She is the daughter of sister Penny Walker-Reen and brother John Reen. All three are from Sickle Chapter.

Hannah's Chapter showed up in full-force to support Hannah. Also present were members of the other sponsoring Chapters: Coral (Morrisville) and Johnson. Sisters from Coral presented Hannah with her alter cloth and bibe marker which were gifts from her Advisory Board and all three sponsoring Chapters. The sidelines included Grand Officers and Past Grand Officers of the OES. It was one of the bigger turn-outs for installation and was so awesome to see. The Demolay came in full force as well - we even managed to get a photo of both the Rainbow and the Demolay!

All of the Sterling Assembly girls are Grand Officers this year - a first! You may recognize a few of these faces as some are grandchildren of our memebrs - three are Wescoms and one is a Salls.

Very Hot day but an initiation with such meaning, the GO's really impressed them, light refreshments were enjoyed afterward.

It must have been 15- 20 degrees cooler down stairs. Several Grand officers arrived on motorcycle to participate? (5) Great day for a ride! Check with Richard or James & Melissa as I know their bikes but there were more bikes than 3 in the parking lot.

Second School of Instruction - Windsor

The second of three Schools of Instruction was held in Windsor, this past Saturday. Past Grand Matrons Joanne K. Keyler and Erron J. Carey along with Jacqueline A. Carpenter were on hand to greet each arrival at the credential’s table.

The three pages (Alicia White, Marilyn Chapin and Janice Luurtsema) escorted the District Deputy Grand Instructors (Sherrill L. Gould, James Chancey, Nadine Martin and Janet Battey) to the East. The Jurisprudence members for the day were Karen Price, Joan Black, Bob Lemnah, and Jim Bennett. Our Grand Lecturer, Patricia Bowman, got the day started by calling for the entrance of the Grand Officers.

Instruction was given and duly noted as the work of the morning got underway. The Chapter was purged and formally opened followed by the reception of the various grand officers. Both forms of balloting were presented. All the Grand Officers did an excellent job with the work.

Just before lunch a few announcements were made. Richard reminded everyone of the upcoming motorcycle ride-in slash poker event that will be held on August 13. Details are now available on the website. WGM Patty updated everyone on the condition of her father, PGP Donnie Chamberlain, the surgery went well, followed by a couple days of slow progress, by the end of the week, it appeared that the Donnie is ‘back’. The members did not disappoint, as the lunch was, I’ll quote Sister Nancy “delish”!

We were treated to potato salad, fruit salad, a baby greens with feta cheese and watermelon salad, pasta salad and assorted cold meats. Desert was homemade cakes, a lemon cake, spice cake and carrot cake.

The meeting reconvened at 1:00 PM sharp! The initiatory work was presented. Again, as mentioned at the first school, look at your Ritual to brush up on the wording before each meeting.

Credentials Committee reported that there were 77 present for the school, thank you all for attending in such a HOT day. A collection was taken for this year’s special project the Vermont National Guard Charitable Foundation with $101.91 being turned over to the WGP Richard.

OES Poker Run - Motorcycle Event

We are excited to announce the first ever Poker Run fundraiser for the Grand Chapter of Vermont, Order of Eastern Star to benefit their special project the Vermont National Guard Charitable Foundation. This event is open to all members of the Eastern Star and Masons plus their family and friends. Motorcycles and automobiles are welcome to participate.

A poker run is an organized event where participants must visit several checkpoints, drawing a playing card(s) at each one. Routes to the checkpoints will be provided at the starting point. 20% of the registration fee will go to winners’ pool. There will be three prizes awarded: 75% for 1st Prize Best Hand; 15% for 2nd Prize 2nd Best Hand; 10% for 3rd Prize Worst Hand. The event has a time limit, however the participants are not timed—winning is purely a matter of chance. Entrance fee per hand is $25.

Drivers and passengers are welcome to play. Multiple hands can be played by an individual. The event will be on Saturday, August 13, 2011 starting with registration at 8 am at the Mad River #77
Masonic Lodge, Waitsfield, Vermont. Breakfast will be available, donations are welcome. Departure to the other checkpoints is staggered and people can take their own route if they desire. All participants need to be at the final destination Isle of Patmos # 17 Masonic Lodge, South Hero, Vermont by 2 pm where the results will be calculated and winners will be announced. A BBQ will be available for $10.

1st School of Instruction - Williston

The first of three Schools of Instruction was held in Williston last Saturday. Past Grand Matrons Rachel Jarvis and Diane Gagne were on hand to greet each arrival at the credential’s table with P.G.P. Bob Lemnah lending a hand as well. The three pages (Nancy Morey, Koleen Jones and me) escorted three Area Instructors (Sandy Lemnah, Dan Gross and Kathy Sjolander) to the East. Sister Joan Black was double dipping as a member of the Jurisprudence Committee and an Area Instructor. The other Jurisprudence members were Karen Price, Bob Lemnah, and Jim Bennett. Our Grand Lecturer, Patricia Bowman, got the day started by calling for the entrance of the Grand Officers. It was funny seeing our newest PGM, Sister Kathy, sitting just to the right of our new Worthy Grand Matron, Patty Rousseau as a DDGI for district 6. Worthy Grand Patron, Brother Richard Backus looked pretty relaxed at this first big event. {On a side note, it was my great honor to escort Brother Richard to the East on his first visit to a chapter after he was installed. He and Sister Patty came over to Chittenden Chapter in Milton to present a Grand Representative’s Commission to Jane Kronoff. She is now the Grand Rep to Connecticut!}

Instruction was given and duly noted as the work of the morning got underway. The Chapter was purged and formally opened followed by the reception of the various grand officers. Both forms of balloting were presented. Sister Barbara Coleman knew her work well and the Star Points are to be commended for their precision when balloting on the Alter.

Just before lunch a few announcements were made. Richard reminded everyone of the upcoming motorcycle ride-in slash poker event that will be held on August 13. More details and a sign-up form will be up on the website soon. WGM Patty wanted everyone to know that her father, PGP Donnie Chamberlain will be undergoing surgery in the near future for an issue with his heart. Our thoughts are with him. Lunch as usual was delish! Ably prepared by Sandy Lemnah and Sue Mullen, W.M. Temple we enjoyed a chicken and dried cranberry salad served with fresh tomato, lettuce and a yummy croissant. Dessert was fresh strawberry shortcake with homemade biscuits.

Sister Patty wanted it noted that most of the Grand Officers were performing work that was new to them as they had not held that office in their home chapter. They did a great job for newbies. Biggest reminder: Look at your Ritual to brush up on the wording before each meeting.

A collection was taken for this year’s special project the Vermont National Guard Charitable Foundation I forget the exact amount but it was around $95. A good start.

Saturday Evening Session

The evenings festivities were launched with Sister Erron Carey, PGM and Brother Frederick Harrington, PGP giving the call to order.

Richard Black, PGP, presented a final report of the registration committee. 226 Vermont members and 93 visitors were in attendence. Jackie Carpenter, Banquet Chairperson, reported that late registrations made her job difficult. She wanted to let everyone know that in the future please remember each person needs his or her own registration form.

Sister Kathy, WGM, closed the session with special words of thanks to the members of her Grand Family. She also surprised Brother Stan Gould with a Grand Representatives Commission to Tennessee! It obviously was a BIG surprise to Stan!

Brother Alec began his remarks by thanking his wife, Sister Roclyn for her support throughout this year. He also thanked each member of the Grand Family for their support.

The session ended with the members of the 'On the Wings of Love' Grand Family trading their jewels for beautiful roses as Koleen Jones read individual tributes.

Installation of the 2011 - 2012 Grand Officers was next on the agenda. Installing Grand Matron Karen Price, PGM introduced the installing team:

The future officers, The Guardians of Light, dressed in purple and white gowns or white tuxes with purple vests, were led into the Chapter room by the Grand Marshal, Sister Susan Ocker.

Sister Karen and Brother Jim took turns installing the officers.

The new Star Points looked ready to meet the challenges before them.

We were honored to have Vermonter and Texan, Sister Elizabeth Bordeaux, PGM and Worthy Grand Chaplain deliver the installing prayer.

At the conclusion of the Installation our new Worthy Grand Matron Patty and our new Worthy Grand Patron Richard spoke briefly giving many thanks, introducing family members and announcing some plans for the upcoming year. The District Deputy Commissions were presented as well as an additional Grand Representative Commission. The meeting was closed and all retired to the lobby for a chance to greet the new Grand Family and to enjoy the delicious refreshments.

The Annual Meeting of the Vermont Eastern Star Home, Inc. was held overseen by Sally A. MacPhee, PGM, President. The Home Board received many memorial contributions this year. Because of better economic times contributions of $500 were given to our Vermont charaties. New Trustees were elected as follows:

The Call to Order was given by Rosemarie Blair, PGM, Richard E. Black, PGP. A repeat performance of the Drill Team was enjoyed. Everyone loved seeing Worthy Grand Patron, Brother Alec, wearing a halo!

Following Grand Chaplain, Brother Dan's report the doors were sealed for the duration of the Memorial Service. Many beautiful and moving tributes were given in memory of departed Past Most Worthy Grands and Past Worthy Grand Matrons and Past Worthy Grand Patrons of Vermont. Brother Dan's beautiful service was completed with Star Point messages and the placement of colored tealights on a special pedestal. Brother Jim Bennett, PGP, brought many to tears with his beautiful rendition of 'How Great Thou Art'.

The morning concluded with reports by Sister Kathy and Brother Alec. Special messages were also delivered by members of General Grand Chapter. Reports from the Grand Secretary and Grand Treasurer were also shared before the lunch recess.

Grand Chapter - Day One

The Call to Order for the Informal Opening was given by Susan L. Collins PGM and Donald I. Chamberlain PGP.

The session began with the Drill Team forming various shapes honoring this year's Grand Officer's symbols and messages. The drill team has been performing for 20 years. Their director Sandy Griswold is always looking for new members.

This years special project 'The Make-A-Wish Foundation' was a huge success with about $20,000 being presented to their director. Money was raised through chapter donations, collections and the gift basket raffle.

A variety of flags were presented for tribute by the Drill Team. A tribute to the Rainbow flag was given by Sister Hannah Reen, one of our newest members.

Following the formal opening many distinguished were received in the East, including Elizabeth H. Bordeaux, Worthy Grand Chaplain, Karen K. Price, Eastern Star Journal, Barbara E. Wheaton, Public Relations Committee, Ronald F. Boudreau, Shrine Charities. A fine and very long line of Past Grand Matrons and Past Grand Patrons were heartily welcomed by all.

Nominations were held for the Grand Officers for 2011 - 2012.

Following the 'A Wing and A Prayer' Banquet hosted by the Grand Represenatives' Association the Friday Evening Reception was held in the Grand Ballroom. Aptly hosted by the comedy duo of Joanne T. Keyler, PGM and Calvin K. Keyler, PGP. The members of the Grand Family were introduced and each had a special wish shared with the audience. Members of the Masonic Appendant Bodies were introduced and the Worshipful Grand Master spoke briefly. Winning numbers for the many gift baskets were drawn. The evening concluded with entertainment by the JCH Duo and refreshments were provided by Districts 6 and 1.

Authentic Tea

Hello sisters and brothers,

On April 30th Scottish Rite had Consistory Reunion, included in this program was an Authentic Tea put on by Nadine Martin. We also enjoyed the movie CATS, The point is it was put on for the Eastern Ladies. Nadine did a wonderful job. Her only wish was that more ladies were there to enjoy it. So maybe next time there will be a better showing.

Sister Barbara Coleman shared a few photos of the initiation performed by the Grand Family in Brandon on February 19^th. The Grand Officers with a few substitutes did a memorable job for these four new members. A nice turn out on a very blustery day. Lots of smiles and friendly catching up was done. Good luck Marble Chapter! Two of the girls live in Brandon and two in Burlington, so we hope to see them often. Their Mom is Beverly Partington, and Barb was told they had all been in Rainbow.

“The future depends on what we do in the present”.

The Mid-winter meeting is scheduled for February 5th in Manchester at Adoniram Chapter No. 22. The snow date will be February 12th. Registration will begin at 10:00 A.M. with the meeting beginning at 10:30. A soup and sandwich luncheon will be served at noon for $7.00. This will be a working meeting for the committees but we encourage all members to come and share their ideas for the future of Eastern Star.

Reservations for the mid-winter meeting on February 5th in Manchester are to: Joan Black, 2679 Old Silo Rd., St.Johnsbury, VT 05819, by January 31st. or by phone 748-8369.

"Fair Haven Chapter, No. 70 will be having a “Friendship Night” at their regular meeting on Monday, February 14th, at the Masonic Building in Fair Haven. There will be a pot luck dinner at 6 p.m. and a Pretty Package Auction before the meeting. The meeting will begin at 7:30. All members are invited to attend."

District #2: "Marble Chapter, No. 80, Brandon, will be hosting the Grand Officers of Vermont when they perform the Initiation Ritual on four siblings on Saturday, February 19th, 2011. All Eastern Star members are welcome. MarbleChapter will be serving a lunch at noon and the Initiation is scheduled for 1 o'clock. They will also be presenting 25 and 50 year membership pins."

LaPlotte Chapter, #64, in Hinesburg, will be having their Annual Spaghetti Supper and the usual Country Western Band on Saturday, the 26th February, at 6:00 p.m. with toe tapping music to listen to. This is open to the public with a donation for the evening’s event. Bring your friends and relatives! We have great food, great entertainment and lots of people. Do not miss it!

The “Can AM” weekend is February 25 & 26 in Ottawa, Canada. If you need the information please let Sister Kathy or Sister Jerri know and they will get the information to you.

This will be at the Hinesburg Community School at 11:00 a.m. registration, eat at noon, the price $8. DISTRICT NEWS

This District #4 will have a get together on Friday, February 18th at the Green Mountain Masonic Center at 6:00 p.m. It is a potluck meal and after the meal we will be having a teacup auction. Everyone is encouraged to search for items that you do not need or no longer want and would like to put them in the teacup auction. Hope we can have a great turnout!

“To the “Heart & Soul” singers who twice came to give mom concerts.” - Lamoille Home Health & Hospice (May 2009)

This past Saturday we gathered for the next stop “On our Wings of Love” tour in Morrisville, VT. The Entertainment of Grand Officers was hosted by Coral Chapter #16, Sickle Chapter #34 and Johnson Chapter #65. The holiday season is upon us and the feel of Christmas was in the air. Angles from the heavens were setup in the entryway to the Chapter Room with ‘Winged Messages’ for all to admire!

Registration was at 11:30 with Angels and Eagles as our purging badges. . . . . J

At 12:30 we all gathered down in the dining room for the luncheon. I gave the blessing, and we all were treated to a very enjoyable meal. There was chicken pie, baked beans, hashed potatoes, green bean casserole. Assorted salads finished the buffet table. There was a beautiful cake with angles for desert, with ice cream and cookies if you desired.

After the luncheon, we assembled in the chapter room for the entertainment portion of the afternoon. We had the pleasure to listen to the “Heart & Soul” Choir from the Lamoille Home Health & Hospice View our current newsletter, The Home Health Gazette The group sang three tunes and explained the role of Hospice and the Choir as well.

After the entertainment, we were treated to an addendum that involved the WGM and WGP as they were escorted through the “twelve days of Christmas” done the Eastern Star way! Yes, Penny Walker-Reen is not lost for imagination, as most of the items gathered were on the Make-A-Wish ‘wish list’.

After the addendum, the meeting was opened in form followed by the presentation of the Grand Officers in the East: Kathleen Sjolander, Worthy Grand Matron and Alec Porter, Worthy Grand Patron. After which, introduction of the General Grand Chapter Committee Member, Past Grand Matron and Patrons, and Grand Officers.

WGM Kathy and WGP Alec and Sister Roclyn Porter were presented honorary memberships to Chapter #16, Sickle Chapter #34 and Johnson Chapter #65.

The WGM and WGP had kind words for all. The WGM Kathy addressed the Make-A Wish project and updated us on how well the cookbook sales and ‘wish list’ items were doing. WGP Alec advised that the Make-A-Wish project to date is well over $13,000.

During the addresses of the WGM and WGP, two presentations were made. The travel award, which is an Angle Wing (designed by Sister Madine Churchill) was presented to Sister Joyce Fowler. Travel Cards will be available at upcoming meeting, and a copy will be linked to the website as well. Start adding up your points, after 100 points, turn it into the WGM/WGP.

The second presentation was made to Ester Meyer, Sister Esther was given a Grand Representatives commission to Missouri which is effective January 1, 2011! Congratulations Esther!

PGP Ronald Boudreau spoke on behalf of the Committee Members, PGP James Bennett spoke on behalf of the Past Grands and Julie Green spoke on behalf of the Grand Officers.

The credentials committee reported and there were 78 present. The silver collection netted $103.00 for the Make-A-Wish project. Also to note, the collection at the luncheon, $170.00 was also given to the Make-A-Wish project. Thank you all for your support.

“An Angel just received her wings!”

Last night we gathered for the next stop “On our Wings of Love” tour in Williston, VT. The Entertainment of Grand Officers was hosted by Temple Chapter #75 and LaPlotte Chapter #64. The weather was nice for our arrival, but we all feared there was ‘rain in the air’!

Registration was in the main lobby and we were surprised to see little bell angels representing the four seasons as our purging badges. You could not go anywhere the rest of the evening without ringing you way along. . . . J

At 6:00pm the smell from the dining room was our cue, after the blessing we all were treated to a very scrumptious Pot Luck meal. Too many to describe (and I do not want to miss one) so I’ll just say NO ONE left the room wanting!

After dinner, we assembled in the chapter room for the entertainment portion of the evening. In keeping with this our month to honor our Veterans, we had the pleasure to witness a One Act Play performed by the Scottish Rite of Vermont. I do apologize for not getting all the participants names. I will add it is a side of Palmer Martin that most of us had never seen before, even Nadine his wife was not without a comment! The play was about the (events) involving President Lincoln the day after he gave his Gettysburg Address speech:

There was a memorial remembrance of Sister Edna Jenkins of Temple Chapter #75 .

WGM Kathy and WGP Alec and Sister Roclyn Porter were presented honorary memberships to both Temple Chapter #75 and LaPlotte Chapter #64.

The WGM and WGP had kind words for all. The WGM addressed the Make-A Wish project and updated us on how well the cookbook sales and ‘wish list’ items were doing. Another reminder from GAP Richard about the General Grand Chapter's Service Dog project with pins and scarves available from the Area Instructors.

Temple Chapter #75 presented the WGM with her own set of Angel Wings and a stuffed dog for the WGP, which will be delivered by BS Richard!

PGP Ronald Boudreau spoke on behalf of the Committee Members, PGP Ronald “Bud” Godin spoke on behalf of the Past Grands and Nadine Martin spoke on behalf of the Grand Officers.

The credentials committee reported and there were 63 present. The silver collection netted $87.00 for the Make-A-Wish project.

Reminder to get rested for the trip to NYC on December 4^th and 5^th!

Our next stop on the “On the Wings of Love” tour is a ‘Three Way” event with our hosts: Coral Chapter #16, Sickle Chapter #34 and Johnson Chapter #65 on Saturday, December 11^th in Morrisville. Registration 11:30 – 12:30 Lunch at 12:30, followed by the meeting.

“God Bless the USA”

Again, we have been blessed with great traveling weather. Yes, a cool crisp fall day, but lots of sunshine to guide us to our next Entertainment of Grand Officers is in Brookfield, hosted by Beulah Chapter No. 15 and Naomi Chapter No. 18 today.

As we gathered and registered on the main floor, you could smell the work being done by crew in the kitchen downstairs, preparing soup for after the meeting.

At 2:00pm our entertainment portion of the day was a salute to Veterans Day and some of the Vermonters throughout history whom we should not forget. Thank you PGP James Bennett for the dialogue and song honoring our Veterans.

After the entertainment, the meeting was opened in form followed by the presentation of the Grand Officers in the East: Kathleen Sjolander, Worthy Grand Matron and Alec Porte, Worthy Grand Patron. After which, introduction of the Past Grand Matron and Patrons, and Grand Officers.

Today’s addendum for the WPM and WGP was a walk through a garden where at various stops along the way, a ‘meaningful saying’ was offered along with a Pansy for their basket. By the end of the walk both had full baskets of flowers.

WGM Kathy and WGP Alec and Sister Roclyn Porter were presented honorary memberships to both Beulah Chapter No. 15 and Naomi Chapter No. 18.

PGP Donald Chamberlain spoke on behalf of the Past Grands and Christopher Smith, Grand Rep of Massachusetts, spoke on behalf of the Grand Officers.

The WGM and WGP had kind words for all. The WGM addressed the Make-A Wish project and updated us on how well the cookbook sales and ‘wish list’ items were doing. Another reminder from WGP Alec about the General Grand Chapter's Service Dog project with pins and scarves available from the Area Instructors.

The credentials committee reported and there were 56 present. The silver collection netted $70.00 for the Make-A-Wish project.

After the meeting, we adjourned in the dining room for soup and sandwiches. Minestrone and Corn Chowder were the soups of the day, and on the tables were platters of assorted sandwiches. Desert was assorted cookies and ice cream. Hats off to all the chefs today!

Our next stop on the “On the Wings of Love” tour is with Temple Chapter #75 and LaPlotte Chapter #64 on Tuesday, November 16^th in Williston. Dinner at 6pm, Entertainment at 7pm followed by the meeting at 7:30pm.

“You can’t judge a book by its cover. . .

. . . ‘nor can you judge a Pretty Package”

The Entertainment of Grand Officers is in Brandon, hosted by Marble Chapter No. 80 and Libanus Chapter No. 47 today, am I must say that I am glad I don’t put too much stock into the weather reports (all the time). Today ended up to be a nice day to travel, with the sun peeking out from behind the clouds throughout the day. In the entryway of the building where we were registering, The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls were displaying a beautiful handmade jewelry box, which the Rainbow Girls will be raffling off at The 57th annual Vermont Grand Assembly in July 2011.

We moved down into the dining room and I offered the blessing, after which, lunch was served to us. We had a very nice stuffed chicken with mashed potatoes, on the table were dishes of mixed vegetables, cold slaw and rolls. For desert, there was a table of assorted pies to choose from. Lunch was yummy!

Following lunch, we remained in the dining area for a ‘pretty package’ auction. PGM and WP of Marble Chapter No. 80 was our auctioneer for the event. There were many packages auctioned off and several of them lived up to the name ‘Pretty Package’! Contents subjective included. It was for a good cause and we all had a good time. Note: I was the recipient of ‘the shoes’ this year!

After the Pretty Package auction, the open meeting followed. After the bible was opened and the flag presented, the Worthy Grand Matron, Kathleen Sjolander and Associate Grand Patron, Richard Backus were presented and conducted to the East. After which, introduction of the General Grand Chapter Committee Member, Past Grand Matron and Patrons, and Grand Officers. WGM Kathy and WGP Alec were presented honorary memberships to Marble Chapter No. 80 and Libanus Chapter No. 47.

The WGM and Substitute WGP had kind words for all and addressed the Make-A Wish project and the Service Dog program.

PGM, Mrs. Barbara E. Wheaton, spoke on behalf of the General Grand Chapter. PGM, Mrs. Joan O. Black spoke on behalf of the Past Grands and Mrs. Audry Moses spoke on behalf of the Grand Officers.

The credentials committee reported 53 members and guests present. The Pretty Package Auction raised $183, and the Silver Collection netted $87.00 for a total of $270.00 raised for the Make-A-Wish project, thank you all!

“♪♫ ♫♪ ♫ Beautiful Music ♪♫ ♫♪ ♫”

On Sunday we all gather in Bradford, as Iona No.31 hosted the Entertainment of Grand Officers. Our string of nice weather came to an end with a cool rainy day. However, as we were mingling around the chapter room, promptly at 1pm, our ears were filled with the sounds of Caribbean! It didn’t take us long to all focus our attention to the beautiful sounds coming from the East. The SOCA Sisters has begun to play. A steel drum, bass guitar and rhythm box provided all with music to help us forget about the weather outside. During the set, we all were encouraged to join in, after all this was dance music!

After the entertainment, the meeting was opened in form followed by the presentation of the Grand Officers in the East: Kathleen Sjolander, Worthy Grand Matron and Alec Porter, Worthy Grand Patron. After which, introduction of the Past Grand Matron and Patrons, and Grand Officers. WGM Kathy and WGP Alec were presented honorary memberships to Iona No.31.

The WGM and WGP had kind words for all and addressed the Make-A Wish project and the Service Dog program.

PGP Cedric L. Smith, spoke and added that he had great experience using the OES website to help him with todays activities and wanted to pass along his appreciation for the excellent work being done to maintain the OES VT site. Thank you to Sister Nancy Gross for her dedication.

The credentials committee reported 39 members and guests present. The silver collection netted $69.00 for the Make-A-Wish project, thank you all!

“Great for eating a sandwich while driving to a meeting!” – RS Churchill

I am sounding like a record, but it was true again today, what a beautiful day for traveling. The answer is YES, there are still gorgeous colors for all to see.

Today we all gather in Fair Haven, as Fair Haven Chapter No. 70 and Gilman Chapter No. 88 hosted the entertainment of Grand Officers. We were greeted at the door of the dining hall by two very lovely young ladies, non other that the daughters of the Brother George Supernault, WP of Fair Haven Chapter No. 70. The girls are members of The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, Poultney Assembly #16 http://www.vt-iorg.org/Poultney.html and were displaying a beautiful handmade jewelry box, which the Rainbow Girls will be raffling off at The 57th annual Vermont Grand Assembly in July 2011. I purchased my ticket, and I hope many others will as well.

The chaplain lead us in the blessing and we enjoyed a very nice lunch. Roasted turkey, scalloped and mashed potatoes, lasagna, baked beans, fruit salad, and a veggie salad, rolls and baked apple dessert with fresh whipped cream. On the table were hand pained favors for us to take home, a Wish magnet.

I used the quote at the beginning of this blog entry, as it was the comment made by our Grand Sentinel as he told us of his use of the dinner bibs on the way to a meeting! Great example Rod!

After dinner, we gathered in the chapter room for the entertainment portion of the program: three fellows who were friends of the PGM Mary Jane Eaton’s daughter. I am not sure if the group had a name, I like “Malcolm in the Middle” but that was used in a television show. Malcolm, Bob and John. Both Bob and John played the guitars and sang, while Malcolm entertained us with the harmonica. The boys can sure play, and by the looks of the room, everyone enjoyed it.

After the entertainment, this being an open meeting, the public opening was used. Followed by the presentation of the Grand Officers in the East: Kathleen Sjolander, Worthy Grand Matron and Alec Porter, Worthy Grand Patron. After which, introduction of the Past Grand Matron and Patrons, and Grand Officers. WGM Kathy and WGP Alec were presented honorary memberships to Fair Haven Chapter No. 70 and Gilman Chapter No. 88.

The WGM and WGP had kind words for all and addressed the Make-A Wish project and the Service Dog program .

The credentials committee reported 46 members and guests present. The silver collection netted $46.50 for the Make-A-Wish project, thank you all!

Our next stop on the “On the Wings of Love” tour for The Entertainment of Grand Officers is with Iona Chapter No. 31 to be held in Bradford on Sunday, October 23^th. The day will start with entertainment at 1:00pm with the meeting to follow. Light refreshments to follow the meeting.

Dinner was Delicious - With a Capital 'D'

The Wings of Love took us to Wilmington on October 17 where Mayflower #19 and Bingham #30 entertained the Guardian Angels and the Soaring Eagles.

After a bit of conversation and catching up with friendships, Brother Jody Boyd welcomed everyone to the dinner table. Sister Rosemarie Blair led us all in a blessing of all things great and good and reminded all what to keep in our hearts. Everyone then enjoyed a wonderful meal of our hosts’ fabulous home cooked dishes.

With the bountiful harvest consumed we moved into the chapter room, but there was no time for napping. Sister Sherrie Lind proceeded to call upon all those successful hunters - or were they scavengers? She first called for all those who did not bring any items and more particularly those who knew about the scavenger hunt. There were many of us and we were promptly awarded the BooBoo prize by Brother Jody.

Sister Sherri and Brother Jody proceeded to award prizes to categories by how many items were scavenged, starting at 20. There were six who had displayed all 26 items on the list. I apologize, I did not record these winners, however they displayed some of their findings to the awestruck audience. There were many 8 track tapes, maps, rulers, purging badges from the early years pictures of many things thought as funny signs. Many dog tags appeared and one still had the dog attached!

The entertainment turned to Bingham Chapter where Sister – Teacher –  Carol Farrington and Brother – Judge – Stephen Farrington called on ten Guardian Angels for the Grand Officers Spelling Bee. After the general rules were explained – The Judge has the final and only say – the difficult challenge commenced. The challenge proved too be great for the two youngest (figuratively speaking) and the Grand Sentinel and the Grand Lecturer found themselves watching the remaining Angels go on to the finish. WGM Sister Kathleen and DDGI Sister Sherrill Gould remained standing at the end and, by Juxtaposition, were declared the winners.

WP, Brother Jody Boyd welcomed all to the Chapter which included non-members. He then called upon the Conductress and Associate Conductress to bring the officers into the Chapter. WM Sister Sherri called upon the Conductress to escort WGM Kathleen to the east. Sister Kathleen apologized for WGP Alec Porter who was called to duty while in route to Wilmington. PGM and PGP, Grand officers and one elected officer from a sister Grand Jurisdiction was presented to the Chapter.

Honorary memberships were presented to Sister Kathleen, WGM, from Sister Rosemarie Blair on behalf of Waverly Chapter #10 of Wallingford. Sister Sherrie and Brother Jody as well as Sister Carol and Brother Stephen presenting the same on behalf of their Chapters.

Sister Kathleen thanked the Chapters for the day, thanked the staff for the wonderful meal and, having just successfully completing the spelling bee, said “It was Delicious, with a Capital ‘D’. She described the altar cloth and Bible marker and thanked the celebrated crafters for creating such lovely works of art. Make a Wish is the program and she described it as going very well, being about half way to the targeted goal. The Chaplain being the honored station this year, Rosemarie Blair was presented with a gift and recognition for a job well done. Accepting the donation from the Chapter for the project she was informed that, as the secretary or the WGP are not here, she could hang on to this for awhile. She closed with “You don’t have to study to be an Angel – Just Wing It!"

WM Sister Carol described a phone call she had received, it was a ‘hang-up’ call. The number displayed on the caller ID was unfamiliar but local, so she called it. “Hello” “Did you just call this number” The answer was “I think you need to talk to my mother”… The resulting outcome was a Sister Kay Johnston, Elected Grand Trustee of the Grand Chapter of Georgia, who thanked all for the hospitalities presented to her and her family for inviting them into this Grand Officer Entertainment. Having a personal experience with Make a Wish Foundation, she thanked Sister Kathleen taking this very worthwhile project.

On behalf of the Past Grand Officers, Brother Richard Black, PGP, thanked both Chapters for all the effort that went into this day, recognizing that it is a large undertaking. Sister Joyce Fowler, speaking for the Grand Officers, thanked for the Delicious meal and the entertainment, congratulating Sisters Kathleen and Sherrill for their spelling prowess.

The next stop on the "On the Wings of Love" tour is Saturday, October 20th where Queen Esther No. 7 will entertain Grand Officers. Registration starts at 5:30 followed by a meal and entertainment at 7:00

“What a GRAND day for TEA!”

This Fall we have been truly blessed with great traveling weather. A perfect fall day, and a Grand group of people to spend the afternoon with. This afternoon I was at the Past Grands Tea held at Charity Chapter No. 57 in Williamstown. The room was decorated in a very lovely Christmas holiday theme. If you strolled around the room, most every table was set with a different cup and saucer combination.

I was asked to lead the blessing which was my honor. I reflected on this room filled with the true Guardians of the Eastern Star of Vermont, our Past Grand Matrons and Patrons. Included below are the PGM(s) and PGP(s) present here today:

We were served tea by the host Charity Chapter No. 57 sisters and brothers. During the meal, tea and assorted sandwiches were offered for our enjoyment. Thanks you to Past Grand Matron Joan Black for the scones. There was a desert table available for those who dared! An assortment of seasonal quick breads with cream cheese, pumpkin cookies and brownies.

After lunch, several groups broke out for some quick business, followed by some more pictures.

Our next stop on the “On the Wings of Love” tour is with Bingham Chapter #30 and Mayflower # 19 to be held in Wilmington on Sunday, October 17^th. This is an OPEN meeting with lunch at Noon.

Brother Vincent’s Chicken “Pulls the Worthy Grand Patron off the East!”

What a way for us to end a Monday, great traveling weather, great friends and GREAT FOOD! Brother Vincent Comegno and his crew in the kitchen took dinner to another level. What a way to start the evening. As a first timer to Mary C. Burdick No. 6, I have to tell you I know why everyone comes to the Lodge and Chapter dinners. These ‘guys’ take their cooking seriously. Started off with a nice fresh fruit cup, with a buffet style dinner of tossed salad, mashed potatoes with gray and green beans. Oh, did I forget the Chicken! Vince’s baked chicken thighs, yes boneless skinless thighs. The Worthy Grand Patron enjoyed this very much. There were homemade “eagle head” chocolate (pops) as a table favor. A beautifully decorated cake for desert.

After dinner, and before heading up to the chapter room, we had two drawings. The first drawing, for a ‘secret surprise’ that you purchased tickets for. I had two tickets and (before the drawing offer to swap them with anyone. The WGM and I swapped tickets and I almost had a swap with Sister Madine (Churchill) for my second ticket. She shouldn’t have backed out. I won the drawing, and the prize was two “Pumpkin Animal” kits. Picture a ‘Mr. Potato Head’ except the potato is a pumpkin (not included) and cast iron extremities to stick into the pumpkin(s), a chicken and a turkey. The second drawing; Everyone who registered, received a ticket, and this was for the ‘door prize’. The door prize was a fall wreath, with brightly fall colored leaves. The winner was Sister Emma Britch.

But I didn't mean anything by it. I was, you know, just saying my prayers for the day. I always say the Lord's Prayer. It makes me feel good, kind of like getting my duty done.

Hold it. What do you mean by that?

By "Hallowed be Thy name."

It means....it means....good grief, I don't know what it means. How should I know? It's just part of the prayer. By the way, what does it mean?

It means "Honored, Holy, Wonderful."

Hey, that makes sense. I never thought about what "Hallowed" meant before.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

Do you really mean that?

Sure, why not?

What are you going to do about it?

Doing? Nothing, I guess. I just think it would be neat if you got control of everything down here like you have up there.

PGP Ronald Boudreau spoke on behalf of the General Grand Committee members, mentioning that 80 people are signed up for the trip to New York City. PGM Jerri K. Riegler spoke on behalf of the Past Grands and told the story of the bats that joined the chapter for a meeting, and Rodney Churchill, Grand Sentinel, spoke on behalf of the Grand Officers.

The WGM and WGP had kind words for all and addressed the Make-A Wish project and the Service Dog program .

The credentials committee reported and I got involved with the silver collection and passing out chocolates, so I never did hear how many attended. The silver collection netted $100 for the Make-A-Wish project, thank you all!

You say, “Kalamata”, I say “Calamite”

When the day started, I was in a fog. No really, living near a river (too much science), anyway as I drove further south, bam! The sky opened up and it turned out to be a glorious fall day. Happy October to one and all, and the first Grand Officers meeting was in Manchester. Adoniram Chapter #22 and Katherine Chapter # 83 hosted the Grand Family in a joint effort.

A delicious lunch was ready at 12:30. We had an assortment of salads as well as a beautiful assorted meat platter for sandwiches. I didn’t tell Erron (Carey) that I had some of the calamite olives, and they were good! Desert was a buttercream frosted yellow cake and brownies topped with peanut butter frosting. The brownies LOOKED good, and SOME people got one! Seriously, they were a hit, as was the whole lunch. Hats off to both chapters for a very nice meal. To quote our Associate Patron, “ << ”

We had a bit of a delay waiting for the entertainment portion of the program, and I was introduced to PGP Frederick C. “FRED” Harrington's crew. To quote Fred, "This is my Harem!"

PGM Dorothy “Dottie” T. Brophy had her entertainment back out at 5:30 last night. This morning she found a 'pinch hitter'! A senior from Burr and Burton Academy, who I found out has several original compositions. Daniel Colson has had his works featured by the Manchester Music Festival . Look for more from this young man. Daniel played four arrangements for us and he is truly a talent, and we were blessed to hear him play.

WGM Kathy and WGP Alec were presented honorary memberships to both Adoniram Chapter #22 and Katherine Chapter # 83.

PGM Erron Carey spoke on behalf of the Past Grands and Helen Whitman, Grand Adah, spoke on behalf of the Grand Officers.

The WGM and WGP had kind words for all and addressed the Make-A Wish project that is going well. The cookbooks appear to be a hit! Another reminder from WGP Alec about the General Grand Chapter's project with pins and scarves available from the Grand Conductress, Sister Barbara.

The credentials committee reported and there were 41 present. The silver collection netted $48.50 for the Make-A-Wish project.

Well I can’t believe how fast this week went. I didn’t have time to post until today. The trip down began cloudy, good thing because I began the morning with a headache. Fortunately it was better by the time we arrived in Chester.

A delicious lunch was ready at 1:00. Good thing I was organized or we would have arrived at 2:00 and missed the delicious meal of roast pork followed by apple crisp. I understand several others including Dan thought the event began at 2:00. They should have checked the OES website more carefully.

After lunch we were entertained by Sister Wendy Baker. She is the director at Fort 4 in Charlestown, New Hampshire. I had heard that the Fort had lost its funding and was no longer operating. Thanks to the Olive Branch Lodge # 64 of Chester stepping in the fort has been reopened. They hope to have a full season next summer. Visit their web site for more information. www.fortat4.com

After the introduction of Grand Officers, Sister Kathy was presented with an honorary membership and an angel bell. Since Mispah is Alec’s home chapter he was recognized with a special addendum and presented with military brushes. The chapter didn’t forget Alec’s wife Sister Roclyn. She was presented with a grow-a-pet (Alec’s dogs are not pets) and a t-shirt stenciled with “Mishap # 49”. Apparently she has a typing problem or dyslexia. ; )

About 45 people were in attendance. Sister Mindy was honored as the Chaplain, her first year in that station. Later Alec presented Sister Kate Coleman in the East as Sister Sheila, PGM, tickled the ivories. Upon arrival Kate was presented with an honorary Grand Representatives commission for her canine companion, Betsy. This new commission will never expire!

Patty Rousseau spoke on behalf of the Grand Officers and remembered her connection as part of Sister Erron Carey’s grand family. In fact all of Erron’s star points were in attendance at the event as was her Worthy Grand Patron, Brother Fred Harrington.

After the collection of $50 was tabulated the meeting was over and Dan and I were on the road again. The fabulous quilt shop was still open next door but I only peeked in for a quick look. I understand a few folks did a bit of shopping either before or after the meeting. Next time I’ll bring lots of money!

I forgot to mention “Thanks Margaret, for the apricot jam. It is delicious!”

“I’ll have the soup please!”

If you have never been, to try and explain Vermont Night with our Sisters and Brothers from New York. . . I cannot do it justice! For me it was another rainy trek down through Route 22. I am not sure how many years this tradition has been going on, but to hear all the stories and share in the fellowship, you would think it has been at least 100 years!

So, on Monday, September 27, 2010 the next stop in the “On The Wings Of Love” tour is in Granville, NY. Our host chapter was Sylvan Star-Skenesborough Chapter #122 with W. Ruth B. La Roy, Worthy Matron and W. Michael Angiolillo, Worthy Patron.

The evening started 6:30 with a very nice dinner; ham and mashed potatoes, coleslaw, rolls and nice sweet gravy. Wait, what; “NO carrots!” how could that be! The veggie for the evening was squash, and it was yummy J (more on that later). Desert was postponed until after the meeting, as Brother Michael (Angiolillo) explained that the ice cream had not been removed from the freezer in time. . . . . no one seemed to mind.

We all made our way into the chapter room for the entertainment portion of the evening. Back by popular demand; A local icon in the business, “Paul Gibbs” Paul grew up in Granville, and now resides in Glens Falls. Paul writes most all of his music and performed several of his numbers for us. As always, there were a couple of tears in the room when Paul was done.

After the entertainment, the meeting was opened in form. The presentation of the Grand Officers, M.W. Karen Marshall-King, Grand Matron and M.W. Robert O. Sharpe, Grand Patron, State of New York and W.M. Kathleen G. Sjolander, Worthy Grand Matron of Vermont. After which, introduction of all the Distinguished Guests from New York and Vermont followed.

The M.W.GM and M.W.GP of New York were presented Honorary Memberships from Sylvan Star-Skenesborough Chapter. After which we had the address of the Grand Matron(s) and Grand Patron. The drill (Addendum) “Friendship with Fans” was done by the host chapter, and the star points presented their ‘fans’ to officers in the East.

Remarks were heard from the Distinguished Guests, at which time Associate Grand Patron remarked that he had heard so much about the carrots. How good the carrots were, and could not wait to have carrots for dinner. To his surprise, (and that of Associate Grand Matron, Patty Rousseau) who had promised these ‘great tasting carrots’ for dinner. We all shared in a nice laugh, and I think carrots are back on the menu for next year: Thanks Mike!!

W. Michael Angiolillo, Worthy Patron thanked ALL of his kitchen help that assisted with the meal and the Brothers of the Lodge that assisted with the cleanup.

Roll Call by State was taken and the total number for the evening; New York, 38 and Vermont, 25 for a total of 63 members. I believe this is down from last year.

The Good of the Order took in $75, and this was given to the WGM and WGP of Vermont’s Make-A-Wish project. Thank you all for this wonderful gift.

The end of the meeting was not without surprise. In the audience this evening was Brother Michael Wood, Grand Rep of New York in Vermont. The M.W. Karen Marshall-King, Grand Matron of New York, being she was in the ‘local area’ announced who the new Grand Rep of Vermont in New York would be, starting their commission in the near future. None other than, W. Michael Angiolillo, Worthy Patron of Sylvan Star-Skenesborough Chapter #122. This announcement was pleasing to the “Brothers Mike”.

The evening ended with desert in the dining room, which I missed, as I escorted the ‘money bags’ and 'session notes' back north to the Grand Secretary.

The next stop on the “On The Wings Of Love” tour is Sunday, October 3^rd This is a joint meeting sponsored by Adoniram Chapter, No. 22, of Manchester and Katherine Chapter, No. 83 in Danby, in Manchester. Registration will start at 11:30 Lunch at 12:30 Entertainment at 1:30 and the meeting will start at 2 o’clock.
